Why Study Taekwondo

Taekwondo is commonly referred to as the World's Most Popular Martial Art with over 70 million people practicing from 188 countries around the world. Taekwondo practitioners (Taekwondoin in Korean) form part of a global family, all aiming to improve themselves and help others through practicing martial art techniques. Taekwondo is also one of very few forms of pure martial art (as opposed to combination systems) still taught as-is to militaries (the South Korean army requires daily Taekwondo practice).

Taekwondo helps teach students the true value of the tenets of Taekwondo:

Etiquette/Courtesy Korean culture is very strong on a respect to seniors/elders values system called Confusianism. This comes through clearly in Taekwondo practice.

Modesty A Taekwondoin has to maintain humbleness in the face of defeat or in great success. Even the most senior martial artist can learn something from a lower grade.

Perseverance As Taekwondo techniques can be very difficult to a beginner, learning occurs in stages. These tie in nicely with the belt ranking system so that students learn to persevere and strive to master a technique, then a new one is presented. This continual cycle of difficulty and success leads the student to a habit of perseverance.

Self-control It's very important that a martial artist learns not only to control his or her body in order to be able to do the difficult and complex techniques of the expert, but that they also learn to control their mind in order to not use their techniques inappropriately and to remain calm and respectful in situations where others would "lose their cool".

Indomitable Spirit It is very important to develop the spirit so that a student knows they have the confidence to handle any situation and overcome any obstacle. While a Taekwondoin may start with very little confidence, as their ability increases they will remember that there was a point they couldn't do such things and know that anything they want to achieve is possible.
